Saw Chrissie & band on that tour… 1982 at Worcester Centrum. Still one of my favorite bands, despite their recent attempt with some terrible covers. Also, I find it easy to forgive bands with that much talent for any personal, soapbox grandstanding (Like on “My City Was Gone”).

Regarding “Learning to Crawl”, I was initially shocked at the sound of the record upon it’s release- Robbie McIntosh comes at the guitar from an entirely different perspective than J.H. Scott did. And Martin’s bass lines had far more groove than Pete’s… but the sheer brilliance of the record won me over. Also, after Chrissie’s appropriate farewell to James with “Back On The Chain Gang” & the “soft” release of “My City Was Gone” (featuring that brilliant bass line you mentioned, courtesy of Big Country’s Tony Butler), they appropriately released “Middle Of The Road” in January of 83, which sonically was the one track on that record that was closest in sound & spirit to the first two records.

I know this all has zero to do with the main subject of your blog… But the sheer mention of the Pretenders warrants that I take the opportunity to gush about one of my favorite bands of all time.
